Free Museums in Barcelona 2026: All 16 Museums, Days & Hours

Every free museum day in Barcelona for 2026, covering 16 museums — with booking requirements, crowd warnings, the smartest free combinations, and the practical details that actually matter.

Free Museums in Barcelona 2026: All 16 Museums, Days & Hours

Barcelona's major museums all offer free entry on specific days. If you time your visit right, you can see the Picasso Museum, MNAC, MACBA, and more without paying a cent. The catch: free days are crowded, some require advance booking, and not every museum follows the same schedule. Free entry at Sagrada Família and other religious sites? Check what dress codes apply before planning your visit.

This calendar covers 16 museums and cultural spaces across Barcelona for 2026. Every free slot, every special date, every booking requirement.

The big five art museums

Museu Picasso (normally €14)

Free every Thursday from 6 PM to 9:30 PM (last entry 9 PM). Also free on the first Sunday of each month, 9 AM to 7 PM. You must book a free timed slot online in advance — they go fast, especially Thursdays. If you show up without a reservation, you'll be turned away.

Special free days: February 12 (Santa Eulàlia), May 18 (International Museum Day), September 24 (La Mercè).

MNAC — Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (normally €12)

Free every Saturday from 3 PM until closing. Free on the first Sunday of every month, all day. Additional free days: May 18 (International Museum Day) and September 11 (Diada de Catalunya). No advance booking needed for free days — but expect queues on first Sundays. The building is enormous, so even on busy free days you can find quiet corners. Need a strategy? Our MNAC in 2 hours guide maps the optimal route. For detailed free admission info, see our MNAC free admission guide.

MACBA — Museu d'Art Contemporani (normally €12)

Free every Saturday from 4 PM to 8 PM. Pre-booking your free ticket online is recommended. MACBA also participates in International Museum Day (May 18) and La Nit dels Museus. In 2026, MACBA celebrates its 30th anniversary with an expanded programme. Not sure if it's worth your time? Read our MACBA Barcelona guide.

Fundació Joan Miró (normally €18)

No regular weekly free day. Free entry on February 12 (Santa Eulàlia), May 18 (International Museum Day), and September 24 (La Mercè). The Miró Foundation is one of the pricier museums at €18, so catching it on a free day makes a real difference.

Fundació Antoni Tàpies (normally €12)

Free on May 18 (International Museum Day) and September 24 (La Mercè). No regular weekly free slot.

City museums with weekly free slots

These municipal museums follow the same pattern: free every Sunday afternoon and on the first Sunday of every month. They're less crowded than the big five and some are surprisingly good.

MUHBA — Barcelona History Museum (normally €7)

Free every Sunday from 3 PM to 8 PM. First Sunday of every month: free all day. The Temple d'August site (Roman columns behind the cathedral) is always free. Special free days: February 12 (Santa Eulàlia). The underground Roman city beneath Plaça del Rei is one of the best-value experiences in Barcelona, and on free Sundays it's essentially a gift. See our MUHBA guide.

Museu Marítim (normally €7)

Free every Sunday from 3 PM to 8 PM. One of Barcelona's most underrated museums, housed in the medieval Royal Shipyards. The building alone is worth the visit. See our Maritime Museum guide.

CCCB — Centre de Cultura Contemporània (normally €6–8)

Free every Sunday from 3 PM to 8 PM. Advance booking recommended for free slots. The CCCB doesn't have a permanent collection — it runs 3-4 major exhibitions per year. Check what's on before you go. Free also on February 12, May 18, and September 24. See our CCCB guide.

Museu del Disseny — Design Museum (normally €6.20)

Free every Sunday from 3 PM to 8 PM. First Sunday of every month: free all day. Advance booking recommended. The building at Plaça de les Glòries is worth seeing from outside even if you skip the exhibitions. Free also on February 12 and September 24.

Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món (normally €5)

Free on the first Sunday of every month, all day. Free every Sunday from 4 PM to 8 PM. Two locations: Parc de Montjuïc and Carrer de Montcada (near the Picasso Museum). The Montcada location pairs well with a Picasso Museum visit on free Thursdays.

Museu de la Música (normally €6)

Free on the first Sunday of every month, all day. Free every Sunday from 3 PM and every Thursday from 6 PM to 9 PM. Located inside L'Auditori near Glòries. The Thursday evening slot is a quiet alternative to the Picasso Museum's busy free Thursdays.

Jardí Botànic (normally €5)

Free on the first Sunday of every month, all day. Free every Sunday from 3 PM. On Montjuïc, a 10-minute walk from MNAC. Combine with a free Saturday afternoon at MNAC for a full Montjuïc culture day at zero cost. Free also on February 12, May 18, and September 24.

Other museums with free entry options

CaixaForum Barcelona (normally €6)

Free on the first Sunday of every month. Free for CaixaBank customers always. The courtyard and rooftop terrace are always free without a ticket. Free also on February 12, May 18, and September 24.

CosmoCaixa — Science Museum (normally €8)

No regular free day. Free for CaixaBank customers and children under 16 always. Special free days: February 12 (Santa Eulàlia), May 18, and September 24. The immersive rainforest exhibit is one of the best museum experiences in Barcelona. See our CosmoCaixa guide.

Fundació Mapfre (normally €5)

Free every Monday from 2 PM to 8 PM. This is unique in Barcelona — a Monday free slot, when most other museums are closed. Excellent photography exhibitions. Seniors 65+ always free.

Special free dates in 2026

February 12 — Santa Eulàlia. Barcelona's co-patron saint day. Most museums offer free entry, including Picasso, MUHBA, CosmoCaixa, CaixaForum, Marítim, CCCB, and Jardí Botànic. One of the best free museum days of the year.

May 18 — International Museum Day. Virtually every museum in Barcelona is free. The Saturday closest to this date is La Nit dels Museus (Night of Museums), when many museums stay open late with free entry and special programming.

September 11 — Diada de Catalunya. MNAC free all day. Some municipal museums also participate.

September 24 — La Mercè. Barcelona's biggest festival. Free entry at most museums, including Picasso, Miró, Tàpies, CCCB, CosmoCaixa, CaixaForum, and Jardí Botànic. Plus street performances, concerts, and fireworks across the city.

Is free entry actually worth it?

It depends on how much you value your time. Free days — especially first Sundays — are noticeably busier. The Picasso Museum on a free Thursday evening is packed. MNAC on a free Saturday afternoon is manageable because the building is enormous.

Our take: if you're visiting 3 or more art museums, the Articket BCN (€38 for 6 museums including Picasso, MNAC, Miró, MACBA, Tàpies, and CCCB) is a better deal than chasing free days. You get skip-the-line access, no scheduling constraints, and you save roughly 50% versus buying individual tickets.

Skip the free-day crowds? The Articket pass covers 6 museums with skip-the-line for €38 — less than buying 3 individual tickets.

Our take: If you're visiting 3+ museums, the pass pays for itself and you skip the booking gymnastics of free days.

But if you're on a tight budget or only visiting one museum, free days are genuinely useful. Just book ahead where required and arrive early.

The smartest free combinations

Sunday afternoon on Montjuïc. MNAC (free from 3 PM) + Jardí Botànic (free from 3 PM) + Museu Etnològic at Montjuïc (free from 4 PM). Three museums, zero euros, one hill.

Thursday evening in El Born. Picasso Museum (free from 6 PM) + Museu de la Música (free from 6 PM). Book the Picasso slot early — it fills up fast.

Monday photography break. Most museums are closed on Mondays. Fundació Mapfre is free from 2 PM. If you're in Barcelona on a Monday, this is your museum option.

Saturday art crawl. MNAC (free from 3 PM) + MACBA (free from 4 PM). Start at Montjuïc, finish in El Raval. Two very different art experiences in one afternoon.

For regular opening hours beyond free days, see our complete museum opening hours guide. Planning around Gaudí Year 2026? The Gaudí buildings (Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, Park Güell) don't participate in free museum days — they require separate tickets. That said, 7 of Park Güell's 19 hectares are always free. Dates and hours can change — always confirm on the official museum websites before your visit.
