Paris museum guides

The Louvre alone has 35,000 works. Paris has 130+ museums plus the restored Notre Dame. These guides tell you what to see first, what to skip, and how to save money on tickets. Note: the Centre Pompidou is closed until 2030 for renovation.

Where to start with Paris museums

Paris has more museums than any visitor will fit into a single trip. The official tourist board lists over 130, plus dozens of private collections. The four that matter for most first-time visitors are the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, Orangerie, and the restored Notre Dame. Start there. The rest are good but optional.

Geography simplifies things. The Louvre, Orsay, and Orangerie sit within a 1.5-kilometre riverside walk on the Seine's right bank, all reachable on foot. Notre Dame is a 15-minute walk east of the Louvre, on Île de la Cité. If you have one day, this is your route: three museums plus a cathedral, no metro needed.

One thing to know before you plan: the Centre Pompidou, normally Paris's main modern art museum, is closed for renovation until 2030. If you came for post-1970 contemporary art, see the Pompidou alternatives section below.

How long do you actually need?

The Louvre takes 2 to 4 hours depending on whether you want a focused visit (highlights wing) or full coverage (the whole museum). Most visitors do the highlights route in 2.5 hours and leave satisfied. Beyond 4 hours rarely improves the experience: fatigue sets in after the first 90 minutes regardless of how good the collection is.

Orsay is shorter at 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The Impressionist floor (level 5) is the reason most people come, and you can do it in 45 minutes if you're focused. Orangerie is the smallest of the three at 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how long you stay with the Water Lilies in the two oval rooms.

If you're trying to do all three in one day, plan 6 to 7 hours of museum time plus walks and a long lunch. It's possible but tight. Two days at a slower pace works better for most visitors and leaves room for Notre Dame.

Paris museums: frequently asked questions

What's the best Paris museum to start with?

Orsay if you have time for one museum and want Impressionist painting. Louvre if you want range: Egyptian antiquities, Renaissance painting, French sculpture, all in one place. Most first-time visitors should pick Orsay because it's smaller, less overwhelming, and arguably more enjoyable per minute spent. The Louvre rewards return visits more than first ones.

Is the Paris Museum Pass worth it?

Only if you visit four or more participating sites in 2 days. The pass costs €85 for 2 days, €110 for 4 days. Break-even math: Louvre + Orsay + Orangerie + Sainte-Chapelle gets you there. If your trip is mostly cafés, walks, and food, skip it. Full breakdown in the dedicated pass guide above.

Can I see the Louvre and Orsay in one day?

Yes, but with effort. Standard plan: Louvre at 9:00 opening for 2.5 hours, lunch on the Seine, Orsay from 14:00 for 2 hours. Both museums stay open later on Wednesday (Louvre) and Friday (Louvre and Orsay), which gives you breathing room. Don't add Orangerie unless you skip lunch.

When is the Louvre free?

First Friday of each month from 6 PM to 9:45 PM (closed July and August), Bastille Day (14 July), and European Heritage Days in September. Booking is still required and slots disappear within hours of release. Free entry isn't always free of stress.

Where can I see Pompidou's collection while it's closed?

Pompidou-Metz (90 minutes by train from Gare de l'Est) shows rotating selections from the main collection. The new Pompidou Brussels opens November 2026. In Paris itself, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville and Palais de Tokyo cover similar ground without the Pompidou brand.
