Is the Tower of London worth £34.80?
At this price it's one of the more expensive paid attractions in London. It's also one of the most substantive. The Crown Jewels alone take 20 to 40 minutes. The Jewel House holds 23,578 gemstones, including the world's largest clear-cut diamond in the Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross. The White Tower armoury, with eight centuries of arms and armour, adds another 45 minutes. The Medieval Palace, refurbished in 2025, and the Wall Walks extend a full visit to four or five hours.
If your interests run to contemporary or fine art, London's free museums will serve you better. If you want the Crown Jewels and nine centuries of documented English history in one place, the Tower of London is the only option.
What is the best time to visit the Tower of London?
Arrive at 9:00 AM on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. The Tower opens an hour earlier those days (Tuesday to Saturday) than on weekends (10:00 AM Sunday and Monday). Walk directly to the Jewel House from the main entrance. It's signposted from the gate. Before 10:00 AM, the travelator past the main crowns moves without a wait. By 11:00 AM, queues can reach 45 minutes during peak season.
If you can only visit on a weekend, arrive by 9:45 AM and go to the Crown Jewels before joining the Yeoman Warder tour at 10:30.
What's included with your Tower of London ticket?
One ticket covers the entire complex: Crown Jewels (Jewel House), White Tower armoury, Medieval Palace, Wall Walks and battlements, Bloody Tower, Beauchamp Tower, Torture at the Tower exhibition, and the Fusiliers Museum. The Yeoman Warder tour departs every 30 minutes from 10:00 AM (Tuesday to Saturday), lasts about one hour, and is included in admission. Photography is permitted throughout except inside the Jewel House, where it is prohibited and enforced.
What do most visitors wish they knew about the Tower of London?
The Chapel of St John the Evangelist on the upper floor of the White Tower is one of the best-preserved Norman spaces in England. It gets a fraction of the traffic of the Jewel House. Most visitors walk past the entrance without going in.
The Beauchamp Tower holds graffiti carved by high-status prisoners over centuries: names, dates, heraldic symbols, prayers. Some inscriptions took weeks. It takes 10 minutes to see and rarely has a queue.
