Tokyo Skytree vs Tokyo Tower: Which One to Visit (2026)

One is the tallest structure in Japan. The other costs ¥600 less and gives you better city views. Here's the honest comparison.

Tokyo Skytree vs Tokyo Tower: Which One to Visit (2026)

Tokyo Skytree is the tallest structure in Japan at 634 metres. Tokyo Tower is 333 metres, costs less, and — according to most visitors who've done both — gives you better city views. That gap is the whole comparison.

Short answer: Tokyo Tower for atmosphere and value. Skytree for record height and a modern experience. If you're choosing one, read on.

Where to book — Tokyo Skytree

Where to book — Tokyo Tower

✓ Online booking saves money at both  ·  ✓ Skytree advance tickets skip same-day queues  ·  ✓ Tower open from 9am (Skytree from 10am)

Our take: Book Skytree in advance if you go — same-day queues on weekends run 30+ minutes. Tokyo Tower has no advance requirement for the Main Deck.

How they actually compare

Height and views. Skytree's Tembo Deck sits at 350 metres, Tembo Galleria at 450 metres. Tokyo Tower's Main Deck is 150 metres, Top Deck 250 metres. Paradoxically, multiple visitors report that Skytree is too high for a satisfying city view — Tokyo looks like a flat map. Tokyo Tower's lower vantage point keeps individual buildings and streets legible. If you want to see Tokyo, not just see from Tokyo, the Tower view works better.

Crowds. Skytree draws significantly more visitors and the observation floors can feel cramped despite multiple levels. Tokyo Tower is less visited, better organised, and on weekday afternoons you can often linger at the window without jostling.

Atmosphere. Tokyo Tower is a 1958 structure painted international orange and white, lit at night. More photogenic from the outside. Skytree is a 2012 broadcast tower with a mall and aquarium at its base — impressive engineering, less so as architecture.

Price. Skytree Tembo Deck starts at ¥2,100 advance. Tokyo Tower Main Deck is ¥1,500, no advance needed. If you want both decks at each tower, costs equalise around ¥3,100–3,300. For a single-deck visit, Tower is ¥600 cheaper.

Access. Skytree is in Asakusa/Sumida — useful if you're already visiting Senso-ji. Tokyo Tower is in Minato near Shiba Park — useful if you're coming from Roppongi or Odaiba.

Who should go where

Go to Tokyo Tower if: you want better city views, you're on a budget, you prefer less crowded spaces, or you want the better night photo from outside.

Go to both if: you have a full day and want to cover it properly. Start at Skytree when it opens at 10am, travel to Tower for late afternoon into sunset. Around 45 minutes by metro between the two.
