MACBA + El Raval: Where to Eat in Barcelona's Most Multicultural Neighbourhood
MACBA sits in the middle of Barcelona's most diverse food neighbourhood. From a €4 Moroccan bocata to a Michelin-starred Asian counter, El Raval packs more range into six blocks than most cities manage in an entire district.
MACBA is a white Richard Meier building dropped into one of Barcelona's oldest, densest, most multicultural neighbourhoods. Step outside and the Plaça dels Àngels has skateboarders, street food vendors, and three continents of cuisine within a five-minute walk. El Raval is where Barcelona eats when it's not performing for visitors. The contrast with the museum's clean lines makes the neighbourhood feel louder, and that's the point.
In 3 minutes
- Eat a €4 Moroccan bocata at El Atlas or Indian street food at Mirch, both under 3 minutes from the museum
- Visit La Boqueria before 9 AM for the locals' breakfast at Bar Pinotxo
- Walk to CCCB (next door), then through the Antic Hospital gardens to Rambla del Raval
The route
MACBA takes 60 to 90 minutes. Your ticket is valid for a full month, so you can split visits. If you go on a free Saturday afternoon, you'll be out by 6 PM and the Raval's evening scene is warming up. On weekday visits, noon puts you right into the lunch rush.
Where to eat after the museum
El Atlas (3 minutes, Rambla del Raval 30). Bocata de Tetuán — a Moroccan sandwich with grilled chicken or beef, made fresh. €4. Open until 2 AM. This is what El Raval tastes like at street level.
Mirch (2 minutes, Carrer dels Àngels 12). Created by Ivan Surinder, whose father was Spain's first Indian chef. Order the vada pav — a spiced potato fritter sandwich. Half the menu is vegetarian. Fast, bold, designed well. €7-12.
Dona Rosa (4 minutes, Carrer Ferlandina 27). Mediterranean comfort food with Middle Eastern influences. Hummus, pita, tapas. Terrace. Open until 1 AM. €8-15.
Dos Palillos (5 minutes, inside Casa Camper hotel). Albert Raurich spent 8 years at elBulli before opening this Michelin-starred Asian-Spanish counter. Sake bar (no reservation needed) or full tasting menu (€55-80). For when you want the meal to match the art.
Bar Pinotxo at La Boqueria (5 minutes). Since 1952. Arrive before 9 AM, sit at the counter, order an esmorzar de forquilla — chickpeas with butifarra, or whatever Juanito is cooking. This is how Barcelona used to start the morning. After 10 AM, the market belongs to the tour groups.
What makes El Raval worth the walk
El Raval has over 50 ethnic communities living in a few square blocks. That density produces food you don't find in tourist-facing Barcelona. Pakistani curry houses on Carrer de les Carretes, Peruvian spots on Rambla del Raval, and Lebanese bakeries mixed with traditional Catalan bars. No other neighbourhood in the city covers this range.
The CCCB is next door to MACBA and runs a separate programme of contemporary exhibitions and cultural events. Five minutes further, the Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu has Gothic architecture, the Rubió i Lluch gardens (quiet, shaded, free), and La Capella — temporary art in a 16th-century chapel.
Carrer Joaquín Costa, running south from Plaça dels Àngels, is the bar street. 33/45 for cocktails and vinyl. Betty Ford's for burgers and late-night drinks.
What do visitors wish they'd known?
- La Boqueria is best before 9 AM or after 3 PM. Midday is slow, expensive, and aimed at tourists.
- El Raval is safe but be aware of your surroundings. Like any dense urban neighbourhood, keep valuables close. The main streets and restaurant areas are well-lit and busy.
- MACBA + CCCB is a natural double. Same square, different programmes. Budget 3 hours total.
- Saturdays: MACBA is free from 4 PM. Book a free slot on the website in advance. Combine with dinner on Joaquín Costa.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I eat near MACBA in Barcelona?
Depends on what you want. Street food: El Atlas on Rambla del Raval for a €4 bocata de Tetuán. Modern Indian: Mirch on Carrer dels Àngels (3-minute walk). Sit-down: Dona Rosa on Carrer Ferlandina for Mediterranean tapas. Special occasion: Dos Palillos, an ex-elBulli chef's Michelin-starred Asian counter in Casa Camper.
When should I visit La Boqueria to avoid tourists?
Before 9 AM. That's when locals shop and Bar Pinotxo serves the real breakfast — esmorzar de forquilla (fork breakfast), a hearty farmer-style meal. By 10 AM the cruise ship groups arrive and the aisles become a slow-moving crowd.
What else is there to do near MACBA?
CCCB is next door (contemporary exhibitions, different from MACBA). Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu (5 minutes) has Gothic courtyards and the Rubió i Lluch gardens. Rambla del Raval is a wide pedestrian boulevard with a Botero cat sculpture and neighbourhood cafés.
