Guggenheim + Fine Arts Museum Bilbao: How to Do Both in One Day

The Guggenheim gets the tourists. The Fine Arts Museum gets the locals. They're a 5-minute walk apart, and the Artean Pass covers both for €18. Here's how to combine them.

Guggenheim + Fine Arts Museum Bilbao: How to Do Both in One Day

Bilbao's two major museums sit on opposite sides of the same park. The Guggenheim faces the river. The Fine Arts Museum faces the trees. Five minutes of walking separates them, but most tourists only visit one. The Artean Pass exists specifically to fix that.

In 3 minutes you'll know:

  • How to plan a day covering both museums without rushing
  • What the Fine Arts Museum offers that the Guggenheim can't
  • Whether the Artean Pass saves you money

What does the Fine Arts Museum have that the Guggenheim doesn't?

The Guggenheim is contemporary art inside a building that steals the show. The Fine Arts Museum (Bilbao Museoa) is 700 years of painting and sculpture in a space that lets the art speak. El Greco, Goya, Zurbarán, and Ribera represent the Spanish old masters. Basque sculptors Eduardo Chillida and Jorge Oteiza get dedicated galleries. A Francis Bacon room catches visitors off guard.

The collection spans from 12th-century religious panels to 20th-century abstraction. Reviews consistently mention two things: how quiet it is compared to the Guggenheim, and how strong the Basque art section is. If you care about regional art traditions, this is where to find them.

The museum is currently undergoing a major Foster + Partners expansion. Until summer 2026, access is through the 1970 pavilion (entrance on Plaza Chillida), and admission is free. Where to book the Guggenheim

✓ Official site — no markup  ·  ✓ Fine Arts free during expansion  ·  ✓ 5-min walk between them

Our take: Guggenheim queues can hit 30+ min in peak season — GYG skip-the-line is the easier entry. The Fine Arts Museum doesn't need a ticket right now (free until summer 2026), so no booking needed for the second stop. If the Artean Pass is back when you visit, buy it in person at either desk for €18.

How do you visit both in one day?

Morning (10:00–12:30): Guggenheim. Start when it opens. The Atrium is best before the crowds. Head to Floor 1 for Richard Serra's The Matter of Time — the permanent installation that justifies the visit regardless of what temporary shows are on. Floor 3 for temporary exhibitions. Don't skip the outdoor sculptures: Maman (the spider), Puppy (the flower dog), and the Tulips along the waterfront.

Lunch (12:30–13:30): Walk through Doña Casilda park. The park connects both museums. Five minutes of green space, a pond, and several outdoor sculptures. There are cafés on both sides. The Guggenheim's restaurant is expensive. The park area has more options.

Afternoon (13:30–15:30): Fine Arts Museum. The contrast with the Guggenheim hits immediately. Smaller rooms, natural light, quiet. Start on the upper floor with the old masters (Goya's portraits are the highlight), then work down through the Basque galleries to the contemporary wing.

Is the Artean Pass worth it?

The Artean Pass costs €18 for adults and gives you one visit to each museum. Individual tickets total €25 (Guggenheim €15 + Fine Arts €10). That saves €7. Buy it at either museum's ticket desk.

If the Fine Arts Museum is still free during expansion works, skip the pass and buy a Guggenheim ticket alone. Check the Fine Arts Museum website before your trip for the latest.

What if you only have 3 hours?

Option A: Guggenheim only (2.5 hours). The building, Serra, outdoor sculptures. Read our full Guggenheim guide.

Option B: 90 minutes at the Guggenheim (Serra + Atrium + outdoor works), then 90 minutes at the Fine Arts Museum (old masters + Basque galleries). Tight but possible if you're decisive.

Option C: Fine Arts Museum alone (1.5–2 hours). If you prefer classical painting over contemporary installations, this is the better choice and currently free.

How do you use free hours at both museums?

Tuesday: Guggenheim free 18:00–20:00. Pair it with an afternoon at the Fine Arts Museum.

Wednesday: Fine Arts Museum free 18:00–20:00 (when normal pricing resumes). Guggenheim in the morning.

Friday: Fine Arts Museum free all day. Do both on a Friday and you only pay for the Guggenheim (€15). That's the cheapest combo possible.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit the Guggenheim and Fine Arts Museum in one day?

Yes. Budget 2-3 hours for the Guggenheim and 1.5-2 hours for the Fine Arts Museum. They're a 5-minute walk apart through the Doña Casilda park. Start at the Guggenheim at 10:00, break for lunch, then do Fine Arts in the afternoon.

What is the Artean Pass and is it worth it?

The Artean Pass costs €18 and covers one visit to both the Guggenheim (normally €15) and the Fine Arts Museum (normally €10). That saves €7 compared to buying separately. Worth it if you plan to visit both.

Which is better, the Guggenheim or the Fine Arts Museum?

Different experiences. The Guggenheim is about the building, large-scale contemporary installations, and Serra's steel sculptures. The Fine Arts Museum has Goya, El Greco, Zurbarán, Basque sculptors (Chillida, Oteiza), and a calm Francis Bacon room. If you only have time for one and prefer classical art, the Fine Arts Museum may surprise you.

Is the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum free?

The museum is currently free during its expansion works (access through the old building on Museo Plaza). When the expansion opens in summer 2026, normal pricing returns: €10 adults, free Wednesdays 18:00-20:00 and all day Fridays.

Two museums, one park, half a day. The Guggenheim gives you the spectacle. The Fine Arts Museum gives you the depth. Together, they make Bilbao one of the strongest museum days in Spain outside Madrid.
