The Whitney Biennial 2026 runs through August 23 with 56 artists. Admission is $30 — but under 25s get in free anytime, and Friday evenings are free for everyone.

Whitney Museum 2026: Tickets, Biennial & What to See First

The Whitney decided American art deserved its own building, its own argument, and its own biennial. The collection covers 1900 to now and treats living artists as seriously as dead ones. Right now, the Biennial runs through August 23 — 56 artists responding to the current moment. It's the show the New York art world argues about every two years.

How much are Whitney Museum tickets in 2026?

Adults pay $30, university students $24 with ID. Under 25 is always free — any day, no booking needed, just show your ID at the door. This is one of the most generous free-admission policies of any major New York museum.

Free entry: Every Friday 5–10 PM for everyone (no reservation required). The second Sunday of each month is also free. Ground floor admission — the Floor 1 gallery, Whitney Shop, and Frenchette Bakery — is always free without any ticket.

Book tickets at whitney.org/visit. No major queue at the Whitney — online booking is for planning, not for skipping a line.

What's in the Whitney Biennial 2026?

The 82nd edition opened March 8 and runs through August 23, 2026. It features 56 artists, duos, and collectives exploring interspecies kinships, geopolitical entanglement, shared mythologies, and technological affinity. The work spans painting, sculpture, video, installation, and performance. The Biennial occupies multiple floors and is included with general admission.

What to see beyond the Biennial

Edward Hopper's Early Sunday Morning is the one that stops people — the quiet street, empty storefronts, that Manhattan light. It doesn't photograph the way it looks in person. Jasper Johns' Three Flags (1958) is nearby: the American flag painted three times, each smaller and mounted on top of the last, projecting off the wall toward you. The outdoor terraces (accessible from multiple floors, best on Floor 8) face the Hudson River and look down onto the High Line.

When is the best time to visit?

Hours: Monday 10:30 AM – 6 PM. Tuesday closed. Wednesday–Thursday 10:30 AM – 6 PM. Friday 10:30 AM – 10 PM. Saturday–Sunday 10:30 AM – 6 PM.

Quietest: Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Second Sunday is free but calmer than Friday nights — the right trade-off if you want space to look.

During Biennial season, avoid Saturday afternoons. The building gets crowded.

What do most visitors wish they knew?

Combine with the High Line. The Whitney sits at the southern entrance. A 2-hour visit followed by a 30–45 minute walk north is the natural sequence.

Tuesday is closed — easy mistake, not well advertised.

The Frenchette Bakery (ground floor, no ticket needed) is genuinely one of the better museum cafés in New York.
