Madrid by Month: What to Do and When to Visit (2026)
Madrid changes with the seasons. Cherry blossoms in March, rooftop season in May, San Isidro in mid-May, open-air cinema in August, autumn festivals in October. Here is what each month offers.
Madrid is a year-round city, but what you do and how you experience it changes with the calendar. Summer empties the city and fills the rooftop bars. Winter is quiet, museum-perfect, and lit up with Christmas lights. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots. Here is what to expect each season.
Spring (March to May)
March. Mild days (12-18°C), occasional rain. Cherry blossoms appear in Quinta de los Molinos park (metro Suanzes, free). The Prado and Reina Sofía are quieter than they will be for the next six months. Hotel prices are mid-range.
April. Easter week (Semana Santa) brings processions, closures, and crowds. Temperature rises to 15-22°C. Retiro Park greens up. Rooftop terraces start opening.
May. The best month. San Isidro festival (around May 15) fills the city with concerts, food stalls, traditional dancing, and bullfighting at Las Ventas. The Rosaleda in Retiro peaks. Temperatures hit 20-28°C. Hotel prices peak.
Summer (June to August)
June. Still pleasant (25-32°C). Outdoor cinema season starts. Museums shift to summer hours. The city is full but not yet in holiday mode.
July and August. Madrid empties. Temperatures regularly hit 35-40°C. Locals go to the coast. Museums are air-conditioned and quiet. Hotels drop 30-50%. Plan outdoor activities before 11 AM or after 7 PM. Veranos de la Villa, the city's summer arts festival, runs through both months with free outdoor concerts, cinema, and dance.
If heat does not bother you, this is the cheapest and least crowded time for museums. The Prado at 6 PM on a Tuesday in August is practically private.
Autumn (September to October)
September. The city wakes up. Temperature drops to 25-30°C. Locals return. Cultural season kicks off with new exhibitions at the big museums.
October. Retiro Park turns amber and gold. The Festival de Otoño (performing arts) fills theatres across the city. Temperature is 15-22°C. Walking weather. Hotel prices rise but stay below May.
November. Cooler (10-16°C), shorter days, fewer tourists. Good for museum-heavy visits. Art season in full swing.
Winter (December to February)
December. Christmas lights along Gran Vía are some of the most elaborate in Europe (late November through January). The Christmas market fills Plaza Mayor with wooden stalls. The main event: New Year at Puerta del Sol (12 grapes at midnight, one per bell chime). Museums are open, warm, and quiet.
January. The cheapest month for hotels. Cold but sunny (5-12°C). Sales (rebajas) run city-wide. Crowds at their lowest. Museum visits without any queues.
February. Still quiet. Temperature starts rising. Carnival events pop up. A good time for a museum-focused trip without the spring prices.
