Free Museums in Amsterdam 2026: What's Actually Free (and What's Not)
Amsterdam has always-free museums, under-18 free policies, and museum passes that change the math entirely. Here's what's genuinely free and what just looks like it.
Amsterdam's big museums are not free. The Rijksmuseum costs €25, the Van Gogh Museum costs €25, the Stedelijk costs €22.50. No regular free-admission days for adults at any of them. If someone tells you otherwise, they're confusing Amsterdam with Paris or London.
That said, Amsterdam has ways to see art without paying full price — or anything at all. Some are obvious, some aren't.
In 3 minutes, you'll know:
- Which museums are always free
- What under-18 and under-19 actually means at each museum
- Whether the Museumkaart or I Amsterdam City Card saves you money
- The one always-free building that's better than some paid museums
Which Amsterdam museums are always free?
Amsterdam City Archives (Stadsarchief) — The best free museum visit in the city. Housed in De Bazel, a 1926 Art Deco building designed by Karel de Bazel. The underground vault exhibitions rotate and the building itself has more architectural detail than most paid museums. Open Tuesday to Sunday.
Rijksmuseum Gardens — Open daily, free, and designed in 1901. Sculptures, water features, and a peaceful space between the museum wings. Summer exhibitions add temporary installations.
OSCAM — Open Space Contemporary Art Museum in Amsterdam Zuidoost. Free exhibitions highlighting cultural diversity. Small but worth combining with a trip to the neighbourhood.
GASSAN Diamond Factory — Free guided tours showing how diamonds are cut and polished. More interesting than it sounds, and entirely free.
Cheese Museum — Exactly what it says. Free. Tourist-oriented but fun if you're in the Jordaan neighbourhood.
Arcam — Architecture centre near Centraal Station. Free rotating exhibitions about Amsterdam's built environment.
Max Euwe Chess Centre — Tiny museum dedicated to the Dutch world chess champion. Free. Niche.
Under-18 free entry: the real savings
This is where Amsterdam gets generous. The major museums offer free entry for young visitors, but the age cutoffs differ:
| Museum | Free for | Ticket needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Rijksmuseum | Under 18 | Yes, timed slot |
| Van Gogh Museum | Under 18 | Yes, timed slot |
| Stedelijk Museum | Under 19 | Yes, online |
| Rembrandt House | Under 6 free, 6-17 reduced (€8) | Yes |
| H'ART Museum | Under 18 | Depends on exhibition |
| Royal Palace | Under 18 | No advance booking |
| Anne Frank House | Under 10 | Yes, books out fast |
For a family with teenagers, this adds up fast. Two adults and two under-18s at the Rijksmuseum: €50 total instead of €100. The Anne Frank House is the trickiest booking in Amsterdam — our best time to visit guide explains how to secure tickets.
Museum passes compared: which one saves money?
I Amsterdam City Card
From €65 for 24 hours. Includes: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk, Rembrandt House, H'ART Museum, canal cruise, public transport (trams, buses, metro).
Break-even: Two major museums (€47-50 in tickets) plus a canal cruise (~€18) already exceeds €65. If you're visiting 3+ museums in a day, it pays for itself.
Catches: You still need to book timed slots at the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum. Card holders get dedicated allocation, but book early in summer.
Museumkaart
€75/year for Dutch residents. A temporary visitor version exists at participating museums. Covers 450+ museums across the Netherlands, including Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk, Rembrandt House, and most regional museums.
Catches: The Van Gogh Museum accepts Museumkaart from Dutch residents but has restrictions for temporary cardholders. Availability can be limited in peak season. Five-day waiting period for the temporary version before you can use it at the most popular museums.
Best for: Long stays (5+ days), repeat visitors, or Dutch residents who visit museums regularly. It also covers both current Amsterdam Museum locations (Amsterdam in Motion at Westergas and Willet-Holthuysen on Herengracht) while the main building is closed for renovation.
Holland Pass / Other discount cards
Most aren't worth it for a short Amsterdam trip. The I Amsterdam City Card is the simplest option if you're visiting 2-3 days and want to maximise museum time.
What about the Royal Palace?
The Royal Palace on Dam Square charges €12.50 normally, but it's free on King's Day (April 27) and during Open Monument Days (usually September). Under 18 always enters free. It's not a museum in the traditional sense, but the interior — especially the Citizens' Hall with its marble floor maps — is worth seeing.

The major ones, yes. Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museum all offer free entry for under 18 (or under 19 at the Stedelijk). You still need to book a timed ticket online. The Rembrandt House charges reduced rates for under 18.
Is the Museumkaart worth it for tourists?

Does the Van Gogh Museum have a free day?
No regular free admission days. Under 18 enters free with a timed ticket. Museumkaart holders and I Amsterdam City Card holders also enter free.
